Rock Hall and the Wm G Mather, August 8, 2010

Catching up on some Summer fun. These images are from a road trip to Cleveland, to visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The Mather was a spur of the moment thing, and turned out to be more fun than the Rock Hall.

Here's the Hall, shot from the deck of the Mather:

Chuck shooting me, shooting him, under the Rock Hall over hang:

The hall's built with a bunch of odd angles. Very weird experience climbing the stairs to the top, to see the 2-level Springsteen exhibit. Just.don't.look.over.the.edge...

The Mather - an old lake freighter turned into a floating museum. Very cool, especially in contrast to the Tall Ships which were in Cleveland in July. Two men to a tiny room in bunks, not luxurious, but vastly better than 50 hammocks strung up in a hold too short to stand upright in.

A couple of interiors, the engine room and the key rack in the captain's quarters (which, btw, were very much posher than the grunts' digs, all polished oak and fancy fittings).

And a fitting way to end this post, our flag, snapping in a brisk lake shore breeze.

4 More Bugs + HUGE Spider Alert

Big, honkin' spider alert!!

Technically an Argiope. About 3" from foreleg to hind leg.

Honey bee snoozing on a wild sunflower.

Drama on a sunflower.

A nice lime-green caterpillar on a roadside rose.

3 More Bugs - The Count is Up to 17

These were taken at the Geauga County Fair, around the Metroparks cabin. The cabin is landscaped with native plants to attract beneficial insects. Did not see a single butterfly, though.

Here's a grasshopper hiding in a flower head. Not a great shot, but he stayed there long enough for me to fumble around with the camera.

A bright red dragonfly behind the cabin. Dragonflies hold their wings flat, damselflies hold them upright - one more thing learned from the Bug Project.

Butterfly?  Looks too fuzzy, however, don't moths have feathery antennae?

Smooth antennae. Hmmm.

The Lodge at Geneva on the Lake

We just got home from three days on the Lake Erie shore. These are a couple of shots of Tuesday's sunset - just breathtaking!

We stayed at the Lodge at Geneva on the Lake. Great indoor pool - nice and warm. We swam every day - and, yup, my thigh muscles are reminding me we need to swim more often.

We also took the Lake Erie Circle Tour as far as Conneaut and checked out some of the little parks and beaches along the way. I'll post some of those photos later - the wind was blowing fiercly, making for spectalcular breakers.

Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen

How cute is this guy, peeking over the peony leaf?

Camo spider:

Technically, a mollusc, and a tiny one at that.
